Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR II) project Kenya

Background Information

BEAR project in Kenya, is “to support national authorities together with the private sector to improve the relevance, quality and perception of TVET in Kenya. The project specifically aims to enhance TVET system capacity and increase collaboration with the private sector to ensure employability of student graduates from TVET programmes in Environment Sector.”

The project had three results: Capacities in assessing and anticipating the skills demands enhanced (Result 1: Relevance); Capacities for using the results of skills assessment and anticipation to promote quality TVET pathways are enhanced (Result 2: Quality); Capacities to develop and implement approaches to increase the attractiveness of TVET are enhanced (Result 3: Perception)

The project finalized and validated the Labor Market Analyses (LMAs) and linked curriculum in five beneficiary countries. BEAR II supported 51 TVET institutions (training, capacity development, technical and ICT equipment), designed and successfully conducted Training Needs Assessments (TNAs) and training modules for TVET teachers and leaders and trained 52 master leader trainers, 1723 teachers and 290 TVET leaders in the 5 beneficiaries’ countries. 2049 (1168) students are currently enrolled in the different curriculum developed under the project in mainly in the 6 targeted TTIs. Development of ICT policies and Continuous Professional Development framework were among the key success factors to train 1763 stakeholders (officials, private sector, leaders) on relevant areas to ensure countries ownership and project’s sustainability. The programme promoted as highlighted in the formulation report, career guidance and counselling materials, skills competition models, quality assurance for TVET sectors, skills gateways and entrepreneurship for graduates integration in Labor Market. At regional level, the communication strategy has improved project’s visibility and collaborative studies for knowledge sharing are developed like the regional harmonized LMAs and curriculum, the regional harmonized approach to career guidance and counselling and TVET standards in this area in Eastern African Community and the regional study on the Development of Entrepreneurship’s Framework and Training Manuals. The report on Role of CPD in Industrial Attachment in Kenya’s TVET system completed the list.
