Brief Project description

Young Africa Works is an initiative funded by Mastercard  Foundation. Our (CICan) specific project is Young Africa Works – Kenya: Youth Employability through TVET. It’s largely a partner-driven project where we mobilize the resources of our Canadian college partners, to partner with Kenyan TVET institutions to build capacity in those institutions to deliver market-relevant, industry-responsive, gender sensitive TVET programs.

  • Young Africa Works-Kenya: Youth Employability through TVET Program (Young Africa Works in Kenya-TVET): key component of the Mastercard Foundation new strategy: Young Africa Works.
  • Will strengthen the quality of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions and systems in Kenya.
  • 5-year program (2020-2025) implemented through a partnership between CICan and Mastercard Foundation and in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, relevant Government of Kenya agencies, and the private sector.
  • Partner-driven participatory approach;
  • Develop Centres of Excellence (COEs) as model institutions;
  • Increase participation of young Kenyans, particularly women, in market-relevant skills training programs to ultimately increase the number of youth in dignified and fulfilling work in the Big Four and digital sectors.

Implementing Partners

MoE, KNQA, CDACC, TVETA, KICD, We have mobilized the resources of 28 Canadian Colleges/Polytechnics and are partnering with 26 Kenyan TVET institutions.

TVET capacity building, Labour Market Information, Trainer CBET Training, Career Guidance, RPL, Applied Research, Gender mainstreaming, policy development.

Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzioa, Tirkana, Baringo, Bongoma, Vihiga, Kakamega, Homa Bay, Kisii, Nyandurua, Bomet, Nakurur, Nyeri, Meru, Nairobi, Garissa, Narok, Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Mombasa. In addition, we are in the proves of selecing another 75 menteee institutions from numerous counties – selection not yet finalized

Sectors you work in

• Mostly Agriculture (agriprocessing, farming, agribusiness), Construction (housing, commercial, industrial), Aquaculture (ie fish processing , fish farming), Manufacturing, Hospitality/Tourism. We even have course/program development in Gemology (Taita Teveta)
• Our programs are congruent with the Big Four Agenda
